We offer the opportunity to be part of an organization with a dynamic, collaborative work environment focused on professional development. The researcher will join the soil health research line and will contribute to cutting-edge research in circular and sustainable agriculture, with a specific focus on fertilization strategies and biofertilizers adapted to Mediterranean agroecosystems. The researcher will contribute directly to IRTA's strategic scientific challenges (especially in terms of improving soil health, optimising water use, and/or valorisation of organic waste and agri-food by-products) and address broader sustainability goals in Catalunya and beyond, under current climatic and resource constraints.Tasks and ResponsibilitiesLead and conduct research to support plant and soil nutrition through the design of innovative fertilization strategies, as well as the development and optimisation of biofertilizers (microbially inoculated products) in Mediterranean agroecosystems.Evaluate alternative fertilizers, organic amendments and agricultural by-products (e.g., composts, digestates, biostimulants) and their integration into circular, resource-efficient fertilization strategies.Investigate biogeochemical cycles (N, P, C) in soils or growing media and in other nature-based systems (composting, constructed wetlands, etc.) to optimize nutrient use efficiency and soil health.Assess the effects of different fertilization strategies on soil quality and health and wider environmental impacts (greenhouse gas emissions, nutrient leaching, emerging contaminants such as microplastics), and possible development of indicators.Contribute to competitive research proposals and foster collaboration with industry partners, including leading funded projects and contracts.Required qualifications and experiencePhD in agronomy, soil science, plant nutrition, environmental sciences, or a related field.Strong knowledge of laboratory methods for the characterization of organic raw materials and fertilizers, including data analysis and interpretation.Practical experience or solid understanding of biofertilizers, soil-plant-microbe interactions related to nutrient uptake, and fertigation systems.Capacity to work in interdisciplinary teams and communicate results to both scientific and practical stakeholders.Strong publication record, particularly in nutrient cycles and fertilization.Advanced knowledge of EnglishStrong teamwork skills, ability to adapt to multidisciplinary environments and a focus on professional growth and development.Experience in designing and conducting field and/or laboratory experiments, particularly related to nutrient management, environmental impacts of agricultural practices, or diagnostic approaches for assessing soil and growing media fertility.Familiarity with Mediterranean agricultural systems, circular agriculture and sustainability issues.Experience in development of biofertilizers, including strain/consortium selection, formulation, application methods, and efficacy testing.Strong statistical analytical skills (e.g., R, or similar).Skills in molecular techniques for characterizing soil/rhizosphere microbial communities (e.g., qPCR, DNA sequencing, PLFA, enzymatic activity) is valued.Knowledge of Catalan and Spanish is valued.Advantages of joining our teamContract: permanent full-time position or IRTA Consolida (tenure track) position subject to the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.Salary: to be resolved according to the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.37.5 hour workweek, with Friday afternoons offIntensive work schedule from 15/06 to 15/093 days of family & work conciliation45 hours of personal daysFlexible Schedule for a good work-life balance.Continuous training and professional growth opportunities. Please know that if you are the chosen candidate and you are from a country which does not belong to the UE, IRTA’s People Department will support you to get the residence and working permits.Instructions to ApplyIf you wish to be considered for this position and believe you meet the requirements, please submit your application through the form available at the bottom of this page.Equal treatment and equal opportunities are guaranteed for all candidates in the selection process, avoiding stereotypes, bias or barriers linked to gender, sexual orientation, origin, age, ideology, or any other potentially discriminatory condition.
