The Institute
The Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) is an international biomedical research institute of excellence based in Barcelona, Spain. With more than 400 scientists from 34 countries, IBEC is part of the CERCA Network and the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST). It has been recognised consecutively as a Research Center of Excellence through the Severo Ochoa Program of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Universities. IBEC’s research focuses on the deeper understanding, organisation and prediction, analysis, modulation and control of living systems to improve health and quality of life for people.
The Role
IBEC is seeking a Director who will provide full‑time leadership, firmly believe in the institution’s mission, and possess proven experience in scientific excellence, innovation, people management, organisational management and international research systems. The position is open to internal and external candidates, and female applicants are strongly encouraged.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Define IBEC’s Strategic Plan and research activity programme; submit to the Board of Trustees and coordinate execution.
Guarantee financial sustainability and source income through competitive funds, private sponsors and other avenues.
Co‑supervise the institute’s economic activities with the Administrative Director and manage scientific human resources, including selection and adscription of research positions.
Represent IBEC at official and social events in coordination with the President and Board members.
Perform any other duties approved by the Board of Trustees.
Strategic Development and Leadership
Create a stimulating environment for top bioengineering research and define the overall scientific and technological vision.
Lead research units, ensuring excellence across all activities.
Direct, organise, manage and execute research, training and internal organisational tasks.
Propose new research lines and potential funding sources to the Board.
Keep I‑CERCA, the Generalitat de Catalunya, universities and other stakeholders informed of progress.
Promote value creation from research while maintaining scientific excellence.
Establish an internationally competitive research laboratory and secure necessary resources.
Foster new national and international partnerships to increase the impact of IBEC science and technology.
Serve as spokesperson and communicator to key stakeholders, including funders, politicians and journalists.
People Management
Guide all institute members, especially strategic, technology‑transfer, academic and technical departments.
Support effective training, career development and mentoring in line with IBEC’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion programme.
Appoint an Administrative Director, deputy directors, unit, service, laboratory, department, academic and program managers and scientific advisors as required.
Approve internal rules of operation jointly with the Administrative Director and in agreement with Board guidelines.
Lead institutional evaluations and participate in the periodic CERCA assessment and community engagement.
Contract and Benefits
The new Director will receive an open‑ended contract with renewal after five years upon evaluation.
