The Institute
IBEC is an international biomedical research institute of excellence, based in Barcelona, Spain, with more than 400 scientists from 34 countries. It is part of the CERCA Network of Catalan research institutes and a member of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST). IBEC was recognized three consecutive times as a Research Center of Excellence through the Severo Ochoa Program of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Universities. IBEC’s research focuses on deeper understanding of biological systems and seeks to predict, analyze, modulate, and control living systems. The institute also holds the HR Excellence in Research Award from the European Commission.

Job Description
The Director will create a stimulating environment for top‑level research in bioengineering and define the overall scientific and technological vision for IBEC. They will provide leadership for the strategic research lines of the institute and ensure excellence in all IBEC activities. The Director will foster a scientific culture in which intellectual creativity thrives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Defining the IBEC strategic plan and research activity programme, submitting it to members of the Board of Trustees and coordinating its execution.
Guaranteeing financial sustainability and securing sources of income (competitive funds, private sponsors, etc.).
Co‑supervising the institute’s economic activities with the Administrative Director and supervising the scientific human resources management, with direct involvement in selection and adscription of research positions.
Representing the institute at official and social events in coordination with the President and other members of the Board of Trustees.
Performing any other functions approved by the Board of Trustees.
Leading strategic development and leadership initiatives.
Providing leadership for the research units of IBEC and ensuring excellence of all activities.
Directing, organising, managing, and executing research, training, and internal organisation of the institute.
Proposing new programmes, research lines, and potential funding sources to the Board.
Keeping I‑CERCA, Generalitat de Catalunya, universities, and other board members routinely informed of progress.
Promoting and encouraging the creation of value derived from IBEC’s research, while maintaining scientific excellence.
Establishing an internationally competitive research laboratory and leading strategic actions to secure necessary resources.
Exploring and fostering new national and international partnerships to increase the impact of IBEC science and technology.
Acting as an effective spokesperson and communicator to key stakeholders, including funders, politicians, journalists, and others.
Providing guidance to all institute members, especially to strategic, technology‑transfer, academic, and technical departments.
Supporting effective training, career development, and mentoring at all levels, in line with IBEC’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion programme.
Appointing an Administrative Director and, if appropriate, deputy directors, unit, service, laboratory, department, academic, and program managers, and scientific advisors.
Approving internal rules of operation jointly with the Administrative Director and in agreement with the Board of Trustees guidelines.
Leading centre evaluations and participating in periodic CERCA evaluations, engaging with the community of research centres within the CERCA system.
Contract Duration and Other Benefits
The Director will be appointed with an open‑ended contract, renewed after five years upon evaluation.
The mandate can be extended by agreement of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation.
