Title: Payroll Subject Matter Expert – Spain Salary range: €36,000 to €44,300 per year Location: Barcelona, Spain Working model: Hybrid (2 days per week in the office) Contract: Permanent, full-time Presente su candidatura después de leer los siguientes requisitos de habilidades y cualificaciones para este puesto.A well-established international organisation is strengthening its payroll capability in Spain and is seeking an experienced Payroll Subject Matter Expert to take accountability for payroll delivery, compliance, and process standards. This role is designed for someone who wants to be the recognised payroll authority rather than a back-office processor. You will have visibility, responsibility, and the opportunity to improve how payroll operates in a complex environment. You will be responsible for overseeing payroll activity for assigned entities, working closely with external payroll partners and internal stakeholders to ensure employees are paid accurately, on time, and in line with all legal and internal requirements. Alongside day-to-day delivery, you will be expected to improve controls, challenge inefficiencies, and support payroll related change initiatives. Key responsibilities End to end responsibility for payroll processing across designated entities. Review and approval of payroll calculations, deductions, and final outputs. Ensuring data submissions and payroll deadlines are consistently met. Primary contact for outsourced payroll providers. Managing escalations, complex issues, and service performance. Leading structured governance and service review meetings. Ensuring payroll activity complies with Spanish labour law and tax regulations. Supporting statutory reporting, audits, and wage tax reviews. Maintaining robust internal controls in line with audit and SOX standards. Working closely with HR, Finance, and Legal teams. Providing clear guidance on payroll matters and resolving discrepancies. Identifying opportunities to streamline and automate payroll processes. Supporting system upgrades, enhancements, and change programmes. What you will bring Fluent English. Degree level education in HR, Finance, Business, or a related field. Minimum of five years’ experience in payroll operations. Experience working in multinational or complex organisational environments. Proven background managing outsourced payroll providers. Strong knowledge of payroll legislation and statutory requirements. Advanced Excel skills and confidence using payroll systems. Strong communication skills and the ability to work across functions.
